Finishing is the trade inside the trade. Anyone can put mud on a joint; the work is getting it flat, and flat is a thing you build in layers, not something you sand into existence at the end.

Tape, then coats, each one wider than the last, each one allowed to dry before the next goes on. Rushing that is why some walls look fine in the morning and show a ridge down every seam when the afternoon sun comes across them.

Butt joints get the widest treatment, because there is no factory bevel to hide in and the only way to make one disappear is to spread it far enough that your eye cannot find the transition. Inside corners are run so they are straight and sharp rather than heaped, and outside corners get bead that is set true, since a bowed corner is visible from the far end of a room.

We sand to a flat surface, not to bare paper — over-sanding raises the fuzz on the face and that fuzz drinks paint differently from the mud beside it, which is its own kind of visible. When the light in your room is unforgiving, say so, and the finish level goes up to match.

How we work

Check what was hung

Loose screws, torn paper and proud sheets get dealt with first. Finishing over them just moves the problem to the paint.

Tape the joints

Tape is bedded into mud with the excess pulled out from under it, so there is nothing hollow left to crack later.

Build the coats

Each coat goes on wider than the last and dries before the next. That is the part that cannot be hurried and the part people skip.

Sand and check the light

We sand flat and then look at the wall the way your lamps and windows will, from the side, before calling it done.

Common questions

Can you finish drywall somebody else hung?

Yes, and it is common. We check the screws and the sheets first and tell you what we find, because some of what looks like a finishing problem later started when the board went up.

What is a level of finish?

It is how far the finishing is taken. A garage does not need what a hallway with a window at the end of it needs. Tell us how the light hits the room and we will match the finish to it.

How long before it can be painted?

Every coat has to dry, and how fast that happens depends on the room and the season. We will tell you the schedule when we see the job rather than promise a day we cannot hold.
